One of the cities of the Greco-Roman Decapolis was largely destroyed by the Turks. Now, in addition to what remains of the ancient city, visitors can see the restored residence of the Turkish governor, the Archaeological Museum, and from the hills of Gadara there is an amazing view of the northern Jordan Valley, the Lake of Tiberias (Sea of Galilee) in Israeli territory, the Yarmouk border river, the Golan Heights and the snow-covered peak of Mount Hermon (Jebel Sheikh). Abila lies northeast of Umm Qais and is famous for its Roman temples, Byzantine churches and mosques set right among olive groves.
