By 1845, approximately 120 Latvians had converted to Orthodoxy, and therefore a request was sent to Bishop Filaret I in January 1845 to allocate a parish for services in the Latvian language. The answer to the petition was received in April of the same year. It was decided to give the Riga Cemetery Church of the Holy Protection to the parish. The first divine service, conducted by priest Jakovs Mikhailov, took place on 29 April 1845. This priest served in the church until 1859.
In 1842, the Holy Synod gives permission to Father Yakov Mikhailov to lead the work to translate Orthodox books into Latvian. In one year of his work, Father Yakov joined more than 1,500 people to Orthodoxy. In 1859, after the funeral of priest Jakov Mihailovs, the priest of Jaunpils parish and the priest of the parish of of Jaunpils parish, Priest Vasily Reinhausen. He served here for 20 years.
In 1858, the Intercession Church was separated from the Alexander Nevsky Church and the Latvian and Russian parishes were united into a single parish. After This unification the number of parishioners increased to 1200 people. Services began to be held in a mixed Slavic-Latvian language.
In 1867, using funds provided by the government for the needs of the parish, a second cemetery church was built - Ascension, designed for 500 people. At the end of 1875 in the Church of the Intercession there was a fire, which destroyed the church. In 1879 the newly built Pokrovsky church was consecrated. Church, after which the Russian part of the parish was transferred to it. The Latvian parish remains in the Church of the Ascension, in which divine services begin to take place in the Latvian language.
In 1896, a decision was made to expand the Church of the Ascension, as the parish parish was growing so much that the existing church could not accommodate all the parishioners. The reconstruction of the church was carried out according to the project of the diocesan architect V.I.Lunsky. In 1909 electricity was brought into the church.
During the years of Soviet power the Church of the Ascension was active, there were regularly Church of the Ascension was active and regular services were held here, although the church was tried to be closed. Since 1993, thanks to the efforts of the parish elder, as well as parishioners making donations, repair and restoration work has been carried out in the church. During the renovation, the roof and the central cross were replaced. A new bell was installed, an interesting fact is that the amount needed to purchase it was collected in two Sundays, and exactly as much as the bell cost. In addition, the outside windows were replaced, and the heating system replaced with a gas heating system.
A few years ago, the Sunday School was reopened in the church, with classes for different age groups. In addition, there are themed children's camps, during which children and parents learn, sculpt, painting, learning to care for each other, camping, and sports. In 2001, during the divine service on the Throne Feast, it was noticed that the icon of the Iveron Mother of God, located in the iconostasis, was tinting. In 2007 was the 140th anniversary of the construction of the Church of the Ascension of the Lord, and in 2008 - the 140th anniversary of its illumination.
