The farm Malteni, located in Birzgale (Ogre district) is famous all over Latvia for its unique Shetland pony breeding centre.
The Shetland or Shetland pony is a type of pony horse breed that is bred on the Shetland Islands. This breed is one of the smallest, but when you relate their size and strength, it is one of the strongest pony breeds. This type of pony already existed in prehistoric times. People have long appreciated their unpretentiousness and high efficiency. The Shetland pony was domesticated over 2,500 years ago.
The Shetland pony is an animal with strong short legs, a concave back and a sagging belly. They have an elegant small head, but also have a very thick mane. The pony's tail is long and thick. But males do not have as long and bushy a mane and tail as females. Usually the female brings one cub. They are born with spots.
At the farm Malteni you can see ponies of all colours. The pony herd consists of 30 horses, including breeding stallions, mares and youngsters.
Children love it here. They are more than willing to ride the docile and humble animals, allowing young riders to do whatever they want with them. Shetland ponies are very good for young riders to learn the basics of riding and how to care for the animal.
