Liwonde National Park, 205 kilometres south-east of Lilongwe is the best national park in the country, it is well managed by a dedicated team of gamekeepers and is renowned for the good species diversity of its inhabitants and beautiful scenery. Located south of Lake Malawi, it includes part of the lakeshore and the Shire River. Thousands of hippos and crocodiles living in the waters of the reservoirs and numerous herds of elephants are the pride and trademark of the park, there are several varieties of antelope and two species of rhino, as well as a large colony of birds. Most of the animals can be spotted in the northern, lakeside part of the park. Much of the park is closed during the wet season (April to October), although the main lodge and tourist camps remain open all year round, but will only be accessible by boat on the water.
