Pregnant Maiden Lake is located on one of the small islets in the archipelago south of Langkawi Island. This Taysik Dayang Bunting islet is highly visited not only because of the intriguing name of the lake. The origin of this impeccably clear freshwater body of water in the middle of a saltwater ocean is an interesting geological phenomenon.
A few thousand years ago, there was no lake. In its place stood a mountain, soft inside and hard outside, that is, the mountain layers were composed of different geological rocks. As a result of the relentless work of the ocean surf, the softer inner rock was washed away. First a cave was formed, then its dome, i.e. the top of the mountain, collapsed. The collapsed vault blocked the connection to the ocean. The resulting natural basin was eventually filled with rainwater.
The lake is located in a national natural park. Its surrounding wooded hills resemble the figure of a pregnant woman lying on her back - in confirmation of the name. In fact, the name of the lake comes from many legends and beliefs. The most widespread legend tells about a princess of fairy-tale beauty who chose a prince as her husband. By the will of the gods, their firstborn died, and in inconsolable grief, the mother gave the child's body to the water of the lake, thus sanctifying it. There are many interpretations of the legend. The meaning is the same: infertile woman, washed in the waters of the lake, will become a mother.
In addition to the legends of the princess, there is also an ancient Malay belief about a white crocodile living in the lake, also giving hope for motherhood. Of course, there is no crocodile, otherwise there would not be so many people willing to take a dip in the lake. But there are small catfish in abundance. In any case, the locals consider the lake a mystical place. Childless spouses from all over the world come here on pilgrimage.
