The second mosque, Sankore, in the north-eastern part of the city, is distinguished by its squat, pyramidal minaret. This mosque, located in the former neighbourhood of large salt traders, like Jingereber, was completely rebuilt in the 16th century. It is distinguished by its remarkable façade: the ornate, forward projecting corner pillars of burnt tile are decorated with projecting capitals. The entrance doors to the mosque, the north-eastern part of which is increasingly covered with sand, are decorated with ancient Moorish ornamentation.
