The Jgantija temple complex, which is also known as the Tower of the Giants, is recognised as the oldest megalithic structure not only in Malta but also on the planet. It was started to be built around 3600 BC.

This temple has been preserved better than other megaliths in Malta. Perhaps, for this we should thank its builders, who built the outer walls of the temple complex, alternating vertical blocks, reaching a height of 7.5 metres, with horizontal. The gaps between them were filled with small pebbles and earth.

The two temples of Jgantija, built at different times, also had inner walls built of softer and more delicate stone. The floor and doorways were also made of the same. Spiral designs were carved on the floor slabs. From the inside, the walls of the temples were covered with a layer of gypsum, which was covered with red paint. The vaults of the temples have not survived to our time, but scientists believe that wood or animal skin was used for their manufacture.

The two rounded temples of the Jantiya complex do not communicate with each other. The southern temple was built earlier than the northern temple. It is characterised by its large size. It probably represented some kind of sacral structure where sacrifices were offered to the gods. The ancient people who built the temples praised the goddesses of fertility. This is evidenced by some ceramic figurines found here during excavations. Some significant finds have been donated to the Archaeological Museum of Gozo.

The Jgantija temple complex is protected by UNESCO. It is open for viewing. At its entrance the locals have organised a sort of small market where you can buy delicious homemade jam.
