The Blue Grotto is a unique cave system located on the southern shore of the island of Malta. It can be reached by one of the double-decker tourist buses that take travellers around the island. However, these buses run quite infrequently. Therefore, we recommend taking a regular bus to the town of Zurrik and from there walk to the Blue Grotto. It is impossible to get lost there, there are signs with arrows everywhere, coordinating the direction of movement to the grotto. The Blue Grotto is one of Malta's most important natural attractions.
The 45 metre deep cave can be viewed from a gorgeous viewing platform perched right on a rocky cliff. A winding pathway flanked by a stone parapet allows you to view the grotto below from different angles. It is best to come here in the morning, because in the afternoon the sun shining directly into your eyes will prevent you from taking beautiful photos. After admiring the Blue Grotto from the observation deck, walk a little further along the road where there is a descent to the cosy harbour. There you can purchase a boat tour of the grotto. Skittish boats with travellers on board disturb the azure waters of the grotto and pass several hundred metres along Malta's rocky coastline.
The Blue Grotto has been known to the locals since time immemorial. During the Second World War, families of local fishermen hid under its rocks from bombing raids. In the 50s of the last century English tourists started to come here. The Blue Grotto has been filmed many times by film-makers. We can see it, for example, in the film Troy.
