There are several ways to enter the Marrakech Medina, but all of them lead through gates, most of which are landmarks of the imperial city of Marrakech. One of these gates is the famous Bab Agnaw Gate, a masterpiece of traditional Islamic architecture of the 11th century. The structure was built in the Old City in the XII century by order of the Almohad sultans. In the XX century it was grandly restored.

Bab-Agnau is translated from Berber as "ram without horns". The gate structure was originally two towers. Over time, the towers were destroyed, and it turned out as if the ram had turned out without horns. This is where the modern name Bab-Agnau Gate came from.

In the past, the Bab Agnau Gate was used as the grand entrance to the government's securely fortified quarter. Nowadays, they are considered one of the most important and interesting landmarks of the central square of Jem el-Fna.

The gate was designed strictly in the Arabic style. The structure comprises a number of Moorish arches passing one into the other, built in the shape of a horseshoe and decorated with traditional Arabic patterns. This gives a complete architectural composition. The bluish shade of limestone used in the construction of the gate gives the structure a smart appearance.

Of particular interest to tourists is the stork, which has built its nest on the north side of the gate. Travellers photograph it as assiduously as they do the ancient ornaments.

The Bab Agnou Gate is located in an area of constant excursions, as there are other interesting attractions in Marrakech nearby.
