The Pillars of Hercules is one of Morocco's main natural attractions, located 18 kilometres from the major port city of Tangier. The Pillars of Hercules are two large cliffs with the Strait of Gibraltar running between them. One of the cliffs, located on the European side of the continent, belongs to the United Kingdom, while the other, on the African side, the rock of Jebel Musa, belongs to the state of Morocco.
Scientists still do not fully know the exact history of the origin of the Strait of Gibraltar and the Pillars of Hercules. According to Greek mythology, the creator of this natural monument was the legendary Hercules (Hercules), who performed many heroic feats. During his wanderings, Hercules marked the limit point of his travels, marking the edge of the land, which in ancient times became the main reference point for all sea travellers. Using the power given by the gods, he broke through the mountain, through which the water rushed, and so the Strait of Gibraltar was formed. And the two rocks remaining on its shores were named Hercules' Pillars. According to Plato, it was behind the Hercules Pillars and was the mysterious Atlantis.
Both rocks are framed by deep caves, the creator of which according to legend also became a brave Hercules. In the Middle Ages, wealthy Europeans visited these caves for picnics. Nowadays, they are actively used by souvenir traders, because every day a huge number of tourists come to see this magnificent wonder of nature. During high tides all the caves are completely filled with sea water.
In these caves, preserved since Neolithic times, repeatedly conducted archaeological excavations, during which many interesting exhibits were found, including primitive tools.
The caves offer a magnificent view of the Mediterranean Sea.
