The Mohammed V Mausoleum is one of the most visited landmarks in the city. It is located in the eastern part of Rabat, by the Hassan Tower, inside the Sultan Mohammed V Memorial Complex, which includes a mosque and a memorial museum.
Mohammed V was the Sultan and King of Morocco, lived from 1909 to 1961. The Sultan lived a very difficult life, he had to endure persecution, live in exile in Madagascar and Corsica, fight for the independence of the state, than he was able to win the love and recognition of his people. It was Mohammed V who became the first king of Morocco after the country was liberated from French rule. And to give the king great honours, the locals decided to erect the Mohammed V mausoleum after his death.
The mausoleum was erected in 1971. The author of this project was Vietnamese architect Vo Toana. The construction of the mausoleum lasted 10 years. The construction was made in the traditional Moorish style. Snow-white marble delivered from Italy was used for the construction. The green dome is decorated with symbols of royalty. And despite the fact that the mausoleum is new, it successfully blended into the landscape.
The interior of the mausoleum is particularly impressive: cedar ceiling decorated with carvings and gilding, walls with traditional Moroccan mosaics. Under the dome on the ground floor there is a spacious room. In its centre is a white sarcophagus, which can be admired by everyone. For this purpose, special galleries have been built around the room. The body of Mohammed V rests in the burial chamber located slightly below. Also in the mausoleum are the tombs of two of the king's sons.
To enter the Mohammed V Mausoleum, one must pass through a gate guarded by mounted guards dressed in national dress.
