Cape Cross and the harbour seal sanctuary is open to the public all year round. This is the largest population of harbour seals on the South African coast. In November and December, up to 200,000 of these animals gather at the Cape during the peak mating season. Cape Cross was named Cape Cross in 1486 after the Portuguese navigator Diego Chao placed the first stone cross on the Cape, a replica of this cross can still be seen today and the original is preserved in Portugal.
