Lakes Otcikoto and Guinas are located 24 kilometres from the town of Tsumeb. Otchikoto is known for the fact that in 1915, retreating German troops sank their weapons and ammunition there. Members of the Metropolitan Diving Club raised a cart with ammunition from the bottom of the lake, which is now on display in the Alte Feste Museum, while other trophies of the Diving Club have become exhibits of the Tsumeb Museum. Otcikoto is between 33 and 90 metres deep, but local tribal legends say that Otcikoto is bottomless and communicates with Lake Guinas, which is 130 metres deep and the water has a surprisingly dark, almost inky colour. Stalactites recovered from the bottom of Lake Otchikoto are 80000 years old, indicating that the lake was once a giant dolomite cave and was formed by the collapse of the upper part of the cave.
