Sesriem Canyon is located at the very entrance to Sossusflei. Centuries of wind and water have created this canyon, which is a kilometre-long crevice in the rocks up to forty metres deep. During the rainy season, lakes form at the bottom of the canyon. Sesriem Canyon got its name from the pioneers who had to tie six animal skins together to get water from these lakes.
