Skeleton Coast National Park stretches 500 kilometres from the Kunene River in the north to the Ugab River in the south. It covers an area of about 16,000 square kilometres. The main attraction of this remote area lies mainly in its colours, changing moods and unspoilt landscape. The landscape of the Skeleton Coast is varied, from spectacular endless dunes to mountain ranges and rugged canyons whose walls are richly coloured with all the colours of volcanic rocks. Shipwrecks scattered here and there along the coastline bear witness to the many shipwrecks that have occurred off these desolate shores. The northern part of the Skeleton Coast is a concession area and is open only to tourists who come on safari by aeroplane. The southern part, between the Ugab and Hoanib Rivers, is open to all visitors. However, due to the ecological sensitivity of the area, it is generally considered a reserve, managed by the Ministry of Environment and Tourism.
