Vaterberg National Park stands in stark contrast to Etosha Park due to its elevated location, much higher rainfall and dense subtropical vegetation. Established in the early seventies as a reserve for the Eland antelope (Kanna antelope), it is now home to more than twenty-five species of rare animals and over two hundred species of birds. The Okarakuwiza cliffs in Vaterberg are the only place in the country where vultures hatch. Since 1985, one of the most important goals of the Waterberg Park management has been to ensure the survival of these rare birds.
