The geographical location of Halden - between Sweden and Norway - predetermined the city's purpose as an impregnable fortress, as the war between the two kingdoms reached its climax in the 17th century.

The territory of the fortress is located between two mountain ranges, fortified by four bastions. Inside it is equipped with a marching ground, barracks, a gunpowder storehouse, mill, bakery, well and other buildings necessary for life. Features Fredriksten is the presence of a locking gate, separating the part of the fortress captured by the enemy from the free part. Fredriksten are the locking gates that separate the enemy captured part of the fortress from the free part, thus allowing the defence to continue.

Climbing the fortress walls, you will have an amazing overview of the city surroundings and the site of the death of King Charles XII, in whose memory a monument was erected. Inside the castle courtyard, each building has a plaque with a detailed description of its history. The former parade ground currently hosts various concerts and fairs, and there is a café in the arsenal building. Walking towards one of the fortress forts, you will be pleasantly surprised by the specially equipped picnic areas.

In the old days, the castle forts were small, isolated fortresses with their own stores of food, ammunition and water. Until 1905, when Norway declared its sovereignty, the fortress was home to a Swedish garrison of many thousands.

In the summertime, you can have a great time on the grounds of Fredriksten, strolling around the fortress walls and places of former glory, or you can relax sitting on a bench in the gentle sunshine.
