The wooden church Garmo was erected in 1150 on the site of an old church, which dates back to Viking times. The church was originally located in Lom, from where it was later moved to Lillehammer. When building churches of this type in the Middle Ages utilised a unique technique, whereby in which the wooden structures were placed vertically.
Over time, Harmo lost its ecclesiastical status and in 1822 it was purchased by Anders Sandvig, who moved it to its new location. A second The church was not rebuilt until 1920-1921. Today, the Harmo church is one of the most popular and most visited wooden churches in Norway.
