King Harold's official residence in Bergen was built at the beginning of the of the last century. It is located near the centre of Bergen next to the Rosencrantz Tower, built in 1270.The tower was enlarged several times over and acted as a fortification and a show of strength.
Externally, the residence resembles a Scottish castle. This impressive building was originally built for shipowner and former prime minister Christian Michalsen. In 1925 it was purchased by the state and placed at the disposal of the of the king. Crown Prince Håkon lived here during his studies at the Naval Naval Academy.
Parts of the building are open to tourists.
