The National Gallery, built in 1836 in a strict classical style of pink granite, is one of the main attractions of the city of Oslo. Built by the German architects Schirmer (father and son), it has become Norway's premier art museum and an integral part of the National Museum of Art.

The best works from the Impressionist era and the national Norwegian Romanticism are collected here. The gallery's most famous and popular exhibit is the painting The Scream, an outstanding work by Norwegian artist Edvard Munch. The museum also exhibits works by other Norwegian artists of the second half of the 19-20th centuries. Visitors can admire some of the works of Van Gogh, Pablo Picasso, Claude Monet and Henri Matisse.

In the small museum at the National Gallery, you can buy unusual and colourful souvenirs as a souvenir.
