The Salstraumen Whirlpool represents the most powerful and mesmerising tidal current located in a small strait. The strait, 3 kilometres long and 150 metres wide, lies between two fjords connected by a large, beautiful bridge.

The water rushes at speeds of up to 40 kilometres per hour, forming deep five-metre-deep sinkholes, 12 metres in diameter. This enormous natural phenomenon repeats every six hours, so tourists can watch the raging several times a day. During high tide, large ships can pass here.

Against the backdrop of this fascinating spectacle, 30 kilometres from the town of Budø, fishing, diving, sea rafting, safaris, etc. are organised for lovers of outdoor activities.

All precautions should be taken while visiting the whirlpool, as it is a dangerous place. Even when it's calm, there are powerful currents there are strong currents under the water. So before setting out in clear before travelling by boat to Saltstraumen in clear weather, you should wear a lifejacket and it is advisable to check the weather forecast, which is quite capricious and changeable.
