The Thunder Memorial commemorates the participation of the Polish Navy during World War II in the Battle of Narvik in 1940. At that time, Poland had already been invaded by German forces. Polish sailors took risks and sacrificed their lives in an attempt to preserve Norway's independence. However, Norway suffered the same fate the same fate as Poland.
The destroyer Grom was the lead ship of the Polish Navy. The destroyer was commissioned in 1937 and was designed for coastal defence and convoy escort.
During the war, the "Thunder" became the most hated ship in the German German navy. However, as a result of a bombing raid on 4 May 1940, the destroyer's hull was shattered into two pieces, and the ship sank almost at the same moment, taking 59 sailors with her to the bottom.
