The city of Iligan, located in the northern part of the province of Lanao del Norte in the island of Mindanao, was once the capital of the province. According to the 2007 census, it is home to about 318,000 people.

Iligan is called the "City of Grand Falls" because it is home to several of these natural wonders - about 20! The most famous is the Maria Cristina Falls, sometimes referred to as "twin waterfalls" because there's a huge boulder on the edge of the cliff, dividing the waterfall into two streams. Maria Cristina is 98 metres high.

Another famous waterfall is Tinago, located in the Buruun district. It is one of the of the most beautiful natural sights in the neighbourhood of Iligan - streams of water flows from a height of 73 metres into a deep emerald lagoon. Behind the waterfall there is a small cave where you can listen to the rumble of falling water. And along the banks of the Tinago are lush rainforest. There's a beautiful legend is a beautiful legend: the influential Sultan Agok and his wife. The people elected them as their rulers, but they became proud and began to and oppressed the people. When the Sultan's wife was pregnant, a sorceress, disguised as a beggar, asked Agok for help, but he refused her and banished her from the court. Then the sorceress cursed the couple and said that their child would be ugly. And so it was - when the baby was born, everyone was amazed at her ugly appearance. Agok and his wife hid the child in a cave and named her Tin-ag, which means "hidden face". When she grew up, she came out of her hiding place and met that same sorceress - the sorceress offered to return the girl’s beauty. The girl agreed and turned into Tinago Falls.

Other popular waterfalls in Iligan include Mimbalut, Abaga, Dodiongan and Limunsudan Falls, which are considered the highest in the Philippines. Some of them can only be reached on foot.

Another attraction of Iligan is Timog Springs, known for its for its icy and crystal clear water that fills several reservoirs. These reservoirs are quite popular with the residents of the city, because they are so good to refresh yourself in them during the summer heat. They are located along the main motorway at a distance of 500 metres to one kilometre from Buruun district. The same motorway also provides access to Bukan beach, one of the most beautiful beaches within Iligan.
