Mayon Volcano is the most active volcano in the Philippine archipelago, located on the Bicol Peninsula near the town of Legazpi. Mayon, which has an almost perfect cone-shape, has a height of 2,462 metres, the base is 130 kilometres long.

The volcano has erupted more than 50 times in the last 400 years! The most destructive eruption in 1814, when lava flows destroyed the town of Sagzawa, killing over 1,200 people. The 1993 eruption caused the death of 93 people. The most recent eruption began in July 2006 and for several for several years in a so-called "quiet phase", but in 2009 it entered an active phase. As a result, tens of thousands of people living in the vicinity of the volcano were evacuated.

Despite the danger of eruption, the Mayon volcano is considered an attractive tourist attraction - it is located within the Mayon Volcano National Park. Mayon Volcano National Park, founded in 1938. The best time to visit the park is from March to May. You can get here along the Quirino Highway; the journey by bus from Manila will take from 8 to 10 hours. The park, which covers an area of 55 square kilometres, is home to a wide variety of Philippine wildlife, including - the common owl, fruit pigeon, Philippine owl, a variety of parrots and wild chickens. Tourists can go on a cross-country trek, watch colourful birds, go rock climbing or mountain biking.

Mayon Volcano, along with other creations of Philippine nature - the Tubataha Reef, the Chocolate Hills in the province of Bohol and the underground river on the island of Palawan - is included in the list of “New 7 Wonders of Nature”.
