The Philippine Eagle Breeding Centre, located in the Malagos district of Davao City, is a paradise for these birds of prey, as well as other animals representing the incredibly diverse forest ecosystems of the Philippines. Every year, the number of visitors to the centre is increasing every year, which is understandable, because here, in the middle of an industrialised area, it's a real wildlife haven.
The centre was originally conceived as a place to display Philippine eagles - a beautiful and fascinating bird, the symbol of the country. However, over time, it has grown into one of the most popular tourist spots in Davao. Today it houses 36 Philippine eagles, as well as other animals, including a variety of reptiles, mammals and, of course, birds that are characteristic of the Philippines. Among the centre's residents are hawks, falcons, monkeys, crocodiles, Asian deer, wild boar. And the most popular local "resident" is the Pag-asa - the first captive-bred Philippine eagle.
The Centre is a division of the Philippine Eagle Conservation Foundation, which implements various research and environmental education projects. Thanks to the materials of the Foundation presented in the centre, every visitor can learn about the life of these amazing birds in the wild and what is being done for their conservation. The centre also regularly holds lectures on various aspects of eagles' life - their feeding, protection from poachers, breeding, etc. Groups of schoolchildren and students are frequent guests of the centre, groups of schoolchildren and students for whom special presentations on the field research programmes of the Foundation are prepared. And every visitor of the Centre can take part in a real falconry!
The centre is implementing an interesting program - for 100 thousand Philippine pesos a year you can “adopt” a very real Philippine eagle! The money will be used for for the upkeep of the bird. On the territory of the centre there is a stand with the names of those who have already who have already given their support.
The Philippine Eagle Breeding Centre is an hour's drive south of the centre of Davao City towards the town of Digos. There are many souvenir stalls where you can buy eagle T-shirts or other similar items. And the centre itself, surrounded by huge trees and flowerbeds, is an ideal place to relax.
