Since its opening in 1985, it has become a meeting place for people who really want to communicate with art. The theatre is named in honour of the famous Polish writer, a classic of Polish literature, a vivid essayist and theatre reformer, creator of the concept of "pure form", one of the most profound and enigmatic artists of the 20th century, Stanislaw Ignacy Witkiewicz, who worked under the pseudonym Witkacy. He began publishing in 1919, and immediately established himself as a colourful representative of Polish avant-gardism. Author of more than 30 plays, he wrote about grotesquely deformed reality, and his works are close to the "drama of the absurd". In his novels he depicted in abstract and utopian form the drama of humanity and the collapse of civilisation. His philosophical works on painting are also known; he himself was a talented portrait painter. Expressing his thoughts on the illogic of modern of modern civilisation, the writer expressed a premonition of its collapse. Perhaps it is no coincidence that during the invasion of Hitler’s troops, he committed suicide.
The repertoire of the theatre, proclaiming the cult of "pure form", independent of the content, it was not by chance that the theatre became a centre of local intellectuals, as well as of all visiting aesthetes who are not indifferent to the avant-garde direction in theatrical who want to experience a unique creative atmosphere. Texts of the author of "spiritual subversions" have entered the Golden Fund of the world theatre grotesque, and this undoubtedly adds to the glory of the theatre.
The theatre has its own rhythm - the beginning of the summer and winter seasons, premieres, the so-called "Carnival of Vitkaca", and the celebration of the writer's birthday in February. All these events attract outstanding artists and theorists from different fields of art to the theatre. Regular vernissages enrich the gallery's art collection of works of art in the gallery adjacent to the theatre. In the theatre café is the stage of Atanaza Bazakbal. This theatre is the first professional theatre in Zakopane theatre in Zakopane with a repertoire and a real stage.
