The market is the centre of the Old Town. This square was once surrounded by wooden buildings. However, a fire in 1777 transformed it, and colourful stone houses with beautiful facades appeared. It was once home to wealthy Warsaw burghers, who spared no expense in decorating their houses with decorative sculptures and paintings.
