Évora is famous for its "Aqueduct of Silver Water". This majestic structure was built by the Romans under Emperor Sertorius. Between 1531 and 1537, the architect Francisco de Arruda completely reconstructed the aqueduct. It was such an impressive structure that Portugal's greatest poet, Camões, even described it in his Lusiades.
