The fortress-like granite Cathedral of Évora was begun in 1186, consecrated in 1204 and completed only in 1250. Therefore, in its Romanesque style mixed with Gothic. It is one of the finest medieval Portuguese cathedrals and the largest among them.

The façade of the cathedral is crowned by two asymmetrical towers, and between them there is a sculptural row of apostles from the 14th century.

Pink, black and white marble was used in the interior of the cathedral.

The 18th-century altar is based on drawings by the architect Ludovisi and houses the oldest functioning 16th-century organ in Portugal.

One of the temple's towers is dedicated to the Museum of Religious Art. Here is a collection of church objects and utensils, sacred art objects, the richest collection of ecclesiastical art.
