In Piazza Condi di Vila Flor is the Roman temple, one of the most famous buildings in Évora. Standing on a high stylobate, with 14 well-preserved Corinthian granite columns, the temple was built between the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD and is believed to be dedicated to the goddess Diana.
It is the only Roman temple in Portugal. Despite this, for centuries it was used as a theatre, an armoury, even a slaughterhouse. But in 1870, the antique building was saved: it was cleared and made available for viewing.
