The University of Évora was founded in 1559 by Cardinal Henrique, brother of King Joao III and Archbishop of Évora. Under the administration of the Jesuit Order, the university reached its heyday by the beginning of the 18th century. In 1759, the Marquis of Pombal expelled the Jesuits from the country and the University was temporarily closed.
