The Gallery of Modern Art is located in a building which, despite its young age, is already considered an architectural monument. Its construction began in 1940, and continued only after the war and was completed in 1951.

The building is the brainchild of the famous architect Edward Ranikar, who used an unusual architectural technique: the window openings are framed with stone and columns are installed in them. The stone blocks of the facade harmonise perfectly with the stone framing of the windows. All in all gives the building originality and modernity. An equally important architectural advantage of the gallery is the remarkable lighting. It is designed in such a way that allows you to view the exposition regardless of the time of day. The sunlight passing through the stained glass windows softens the rooms and creates an even greater sense of space. This adds to the experience of viewing the works on display.

Apart from its unusual appearance, the Gallery is interesting for its rich collection of works by Slovenian and foreign artists of the 20th century. In addition to paintings and sculptures, the permanent exhibition includes works of applied art. Among local masters, the exhibition of works by sculptor and painter Toni Kralj usually attracts the attention of visitors.

There are also works by contemporary graphic artists in the permanent collection. And in honour of Ljubljana's graphic art, the Gallery hosts an international biennial biennale every two years.

Despite the relatively small size of the Gallery, there are works by representatives of all major contemporary art movements. Thematic exhibitions are also not uncommon, making it an attractive place for art lovers of different generations and views.
