Durban's waterfront has become one of the city's most exciting and important projects over the past decade. Paradoxically, this amazing area, with its breathtaking scenery and convenient location, has until recently been under-appreciated and underserved, yet it is destined to become one of Durban's most prestigious places to live, work and play.
Durban Waterfront covers the area from Bell Street from the harbour entrance to Mahatma Gandhi Beach, formerly known as Point Road. Over the past decade, the area has seen the construction of the family entertainment water park Ushaka Marine World, the Sea World aquarium and dolphinarium, several shopping centres with a variety of shops and restaurants from fast food to ethnic themed gourmet restaurants. It's worth sampling the menu at Shipwrek at Ushaka Marine World surrounded by swimming sharks. Along the waterfront, there are plenty of attractions for families to enjoy. There is also Minitown, a miniature model of the city of Durban, and the Snake Park.
Durban's waterfront can be compared to some of the world's best beaches, such as Miami Beach. Here you can find surfers and holidaymakers enjoying the warm waters of the ocean. And what amazing sunrises and sunsets can be viewed from the balconies of the luxurious apartments of numerous hotels overlooking the ocean.
The Durban Waterfront redevelopment initiative was not just an attempt to expand the city to turn the area into another theme park or tourist resort. This project resulted in the creation of a unique landmark for the city.
