The National Zoo in Pretoria was established in 1899. This largest zoo in South Africa, spread over 85 hectares, houses over 3,100 specimens of animals, birds, reptiles and fish, i.e. over 210 species of mammals, 200 species of birds, 190 species of fish, 100 species of reptiles and 10 species of amphibians. These figures include fauna housed at Pretoria Zoo, as well as at two animal conservation centres in Lichtenburg, Mokopane North West Province and Limpopo Province, and Emerald Animal World Park.

Half of the zoo grounds are on relatively flat ground, while the other half is located on a hillside. The two parts are separated by the Apis River, which flows through the zoo.

Pretoria Zoo, as well as its breeding centres, conducts research and development work to conserve and restore endemics of the local fauna. It is also home to a large collection of exotic South African trees, which is one of the top three largest collections in the world.

At the zoo, you can explore the fascinating world of underwater life in the largest marine aquarium and visit the reptile park. It is also possible to relax in nature with the whole family or a group, as well as spend the night and attend a night tour, observing the fascinating world of nocturnal animals. The zoo offers educational programmes for children and schoolchildren. The ZooMobile excursion is also available. In the zoo's large recreation area you can play golf, take a cable car ride to the top of the mountain, or drive a caravan along the zoo's more than 6 kilometres of paths, as well as join the zoo staff in caring for the animals.

For the convenience of visitors to Pretoria Zoo, there is a restaurant that offers a varied menu, as well as several snack stands. Next to the restaurant is a children's playground for little ones.
