The Gothic St. Peter's Cathedral is located in the city centre. This main city church was built in the German Gothic style, as many German merchants had long settled in Malmö. Fragments of 15th century frescoes have been preserved in the church, which was almost completely destroyed by Protestants in the middle of the 16th century. The church's altar, dating from 1611, is one of the largest in Northern Europe.
