The Ice Pavilion, one of the original attractions of the Saas-Fee resort, is located in a deep cave whose entrance is at an altitude of 3456 metres. To reach it, you have to use the services offered by a funicular railway called Metro Alpen. It takes tourists up to the alpine peak of Mittelallwein. A shop selling sports equipment can be found near the funicular terminus and the high-mountain panoramic restaurant, which rotates on its axis. Directly from the shop, resort guests enter the Ice Grotto. There is a 70-metre underground corridor to it. The pavilion itself is a 5,000 metre square cave formed in the Mittelallain Glacier at a depth of 40 metres, so visitors can see a slice of the glacier, which is quite interesting.
The huge ice cave is divided into sections. Children will love the exhibition of ice sculptures, which are also illuminated by bright multi-coloured lights. Adults can wander through the ice labyrinth and then visit the chapel, which is built right underground. Sometimes solemn services are held there. Some romantically inclined couples even book their wedding here. There is also an observation deck in the Ice Pavilion.
Right at the entrance to the pavilion there is a photo machine, with the help of which each visitor can capture himself against the background of thousand-year-old ice walls.
A visit to the Ice Pavilion, which was completely renovated in spring 2016, is not included in the price of a ski pass. Tickets to this grotto must be purchased separately.
