My Application

The International Monument to the Reformation in Geneva commemorates the events of the of the Reformation movement within the Church. The foundations of the monument were laid on the 400th anniversary of Jean Calvin's birth in 1909. In honour of the event. an international competition of architects in which 70 masters from different countries took part. from all over the world. There were four winners: Alphonse Laverriere and Jean Taillens. by French sculptors Paul Landowski and Henry Bouchard. The construction of the monument was finished in 1917. The stones used for construction were brought from the quarries of Puinet in Burgundy.

On the plinth there are statues of Jean Calvin, Theodore de Beze, John Knox, Guillaume Farel. To their left and right are reliefs recounting important events in the in the history of the Reformation. In addition to these figures, there are other smaller figures on the wall. in size. These are statues of personalities who also played an important role in the Reformation: Gaspar de Coligny (1517-1572), Istvan Bochkai (1556-1606), Oliver Cromwell (1599-1658), Roger Williams (1604-1685), Frederick William I of Brandenburg. (1620-1688).

On either side of the central statues can be read the motto of Geneva and of the entire Reformation movement: Post Tenebras Lux (Latin for "After darkness, light"). light after darkness").
