Flims and Laax are two neighbouring resorts in Switzerland. St Martin's Church is known for being the main attraction of one of these resorts, namely the town of Flims. This church is considered to be the oldest in the town as it was built in the 9th century. Moreover, it is valued as an architectural monument, as it is one of the few buildings in the true Romanesque style, which is known to be the predecessor of the Gothic style.
In 1512 it was decided to start the first restoration of the church during its existence. By that time the building was dilapidated and required major repairs. During the works, the architect Andreas Büller made many changes to the interior of the church, but nevertheless preserved its appearance. The altar and choir were replaced because in the state they were in they were dangerous for the parishioners, as they could collapse at any time. The interior decoration shows the elegance of the Renaissance period that was flourishing at the time.
.
The architect was unable to complete the bell tower, so it was not finished until two centuries later. This explains the presence of the dome crowning the tower of the belfry, which has Rococo elements, but in general the church complex has been preserved in its original form.
