Ribat is a monastery-fortress used to defend the coast from Christian attack. The Ribat was finally completed in 821 during the reign of the Aglabids.
Along the perimeter of the courtyard, paved with light-coloured stone, there are galleries of cells and a watchtower - Nador. If you climb the 73 steps to the top of the tower, you will get a magnificent view of the city and the surrounding area.
