The Mausoleum of Sidi Mahrez is the burial place of Abu Mohammed Mahrez el-Sadiki, one of the main Islamic patron saints of Tunisia. It was he who, at the beginning of the 19th century, coming from the town of Aryana (north of Tunisia), gathered the townspeople in the main square and encouraged them with his speeches to restore at least some of the ancient architectural monuments destroyed during the numerous wars with neighbouring countries, mainly Turkey, which dominated the territory of Tunisia at that time. After the preacher's death in 1862, the grateful citizens of the city built this mausoleum.
The mausoleum is located in the neighbourhood of El Hafsia in the north of the main and oldest square of the city. The building of the Sidi Mahreza Mausoleum has a restrained appearance, which is characteristic of Ottoman-style eastern funerary structures. The special feature of this building is the nine towering domes. Above the main room of the building is a large white dome, flanked by four smaller ones and four more on the edges of the roof of the mausoleum. A richly decorated prayer hall and a small green garden are attached to the mosque. The tomb is built in Islamic style and decorated inside with ligature and paintings, which in turn gives a special majesty to the building. The outside of the mausoleum is painted white, the colour of purity and true faith.
Opposite the tomb is the Sidi Mahreza Mosque, also built in honour of Abu Mohammed.
