The amphitheatre in El Djem (42 kilometres from Mahdia) was built in the 3rd century and could seat up to 30,000 spectators. Three floors of arcades have survived to this day, the stairs and benches have been restored. Under the arena runs a gallery with several secret exits to the outside. These galleries contained beasts of prey to fight the gladiators.
Nowadays, music festivals, symphony orchestra concerts and jazz festivals are organised here.
