The Grand Mosque was built in 921. According to legend, only the Mahdi himself and his entourage could pass through its monumental entrance portal. Only fragments of the building have survived to this day. In 1965, the mosque was restored exactly to the plans of the 10th century Fatimid mosque, but it is currently closed to the public.
