The legendary Cleopatra Island is located in the Aegean Sea and looks like a piece of paradise surrounded by azure waters. Cleopatra's Island is a historical place which is located in the Gulf of Gökova in the Aegean Sea about eighteen kilometres north of the city of Marmaris. The existing legend tells that about two thousand years ago Mark Antony gave his beloved and future queen Cleopatra the island. The beauty turned out to be quite capricious, and she did not like the sand that is on the beaches of this island. Then the then Emperor Mark Antony ordered to deliver a special sand from North Africa, which was done. If you believe this legend, then just on the beaches of this island Antony and Cleopatra spent their nights full of passion and love.
Perhaps this is just a beautiful fairy tale, but exactly the same sand exists in only one more place on Earth - in the north of Egypt. The beach on this island is also named in honour of the queen. It has a width of five metres and a length of fifty metres.
The sand is unusual in its structure - the grains of sand are the size of pollock roe, only they are snow-white in colour and look like small pearls. This sand is highly valued, so you can not enter the beach in shoes, and on the way out it must be washed off. If you dig for 20-40 centimetres, you can come across a hard, like slabs of sand.
Having bathed at your leisure you can visit the local sights - the temple of Apollo and the ancient amphitheatre, the ruins of which remind of ancient times (a tour of these sights will take only 30 minutes). The atmosphere of those times is in the air, and it seems quite possible to see famous lovers on the steps of the amphitheatre.
A trip to this ancient legendary island begins with a boat trip, during which you can see picturesque islands and bays. The island itself is untouched by civilisation.
The sea here is crystal clear: the bottom and scurrying fish can be seen at a depth of up to 3 metres, which is far enough from the shore, as the entrance to the water is gentle. Here, not far from the beach, there are ruins of the town of Sedra, where the aforementioned lovers met.
Like most Turkish beaches, Cleopatra Island has umbrellas and sunbeds, so all tourists can enjoy swimming and get maximum pleasure in this wonderful place. There are eateries on the island near the beach where you can eat and buy some drinks.
