The famous Mount Ararat is located about 300 kilometres east of Erzurum, near the small town of Dogubayazit, near the Iranian border. Its summit (5165 metres) is covered with eternal snow and on a clear day can be seen from afar. According to biblical legend, the ark of Noah landed on Ararat after the Great Flood. Since 1920, according to the Leninakan Peace Treaty, Mount Ararat, the sacred mountain of the Armenians, belongs to Turkey.
