The fountain, located in front of the Baba Hümayun Gate of Topkapi Palace, was built in 1728-1729 on the orders of Ahmed III, the reformist sultan of the "era of the Tulip Era", on the site of the Byzantine Peraiton Fountain. This architectural masterpiece was erected in the Ottoman Baroque style and well emphasises the European influence on classical Ottoman architecture. Sultan Ahmed Fountain III was originally located in Usküdar Square opposite the pier. This unusual building with a pointed roof covers an area of 10 x 10 metres. It was built on the seashore so that travellers sailing on the Bosphorus could quench their thirst. Earlier, on religious holidays and Ramadan days, free sherbet was distributed free of charge to city dwellers at the walls of the fountain.
On the main façade of the building, one can read Ahmed III's admonition: "Pray for the Khan Ahmed and drink this water after saying your prayers". To its present The Sultan Ahmed III Fountain was moved to its present location as a result of renovations. The structure, which has an eight-sided prism-shaped basin in the centre, consists of sebils (charity fountains) and side fountains at the corners. The main structure, set on a platform with a two-stage stairs. The structure is highly aesthetically pleasing thanks to such elements of the architectural elements such as ornaments with vegetal motifs, muqarnas (convex trim), canopies, niches and borders. In addition, medallions with the inscription "Mashallah" and motifs depicting long elegant vases with bouquets of flowers are an indication of high artistic skill. The wooden roof of the fountain is covered with lead, which protects the main part of the structure from the effects of sunlight and other environmental factors. Above the fountain are domes of small size, and ornaments on the eaves made of wood give the roof an artistic value. Unusual beauty and lightness are given to the building by the graceful vaults, beautifully decorated with tiles, original reliefs and a hinged roof. The stele of the fountain and the bais of Sultan Ahmed III above the fountain, made of massive marble, were the property of Sultan Ahmed III, Grand Vizier Damad Ibrahim and Pasha Nevşehirli. They were painted in the Sulusi script and were mentioned many times mentioned by famous poets of the time such as Shakir, Nadim and Rahim.
Nowadays, the fountain is located at the crossroads of the densely populated avenues Paşalimani and Hakimiyeti Milliye avenues and is rightly called one of the most beautiful fountains in Istanbul.
