A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1986, Khami, located 22 kilometres west of Bulawayo, has inherited the main architectural features of Great Zimbabwe. The age of Khami is attributed to the fifteenth to seventeenth centuries. The manner in which the stone structures were built is reminiscent of the walls of Great Zimbabwe, but in Khami the use of a variety of ornaments and decorations indicates a more advanced design technique. The grandeur of the structures and the variety of artefacts found, most likely the likeness of regalia, suggest that the state, which historians call Torwa, was once administered from the building.
