One of the outstanding engineering achievements of the last century was the construction of the 112 metre Kariba Dam in Zimbabwe, which dammed the mighty Zambezi River and created one of the largest man-made lakes in the world. The shores of the lake, which covers an area of about 5,180 square kilometres and is known for its scenic beauty, attract many tourists who come here to go sailing, water skiing, sunbathing, fishing for tiger fish, for which Kariba is famous, or to try their luck in the casino. Lake Kariba also has a thriving commercial fishing industry.
