Zimbabwe is a country rich in rock art specimens. The Rock Art Unit of the Department of Stone Age Archaeological Finds in Harare has an official list of over 2000 accessible caves and sites with mural paintings.
The most famous and impressive of these is Nswatugi Cave in the Matopos district in the west of the country, where stunning examples of ancient rock art can be seen. Nswatuga's drawings are considered among the most outstanding in Africa. In the same area are the equally interesting Silozwane, Bambata and Pomongwe caves.
Prehistoric drawings on stone walls, ledges and ceilings can be found almost all over the territory of Zimbabwe, and how many more caves with drawings remain undiscovered, remains a mystery to everyone.
