The government palace, built by local stonemasons, was built in neo-Gothic style, designed by the Roman architect Francesco Adzurri. Construction, which began in 1884, lasted 10 years. The façade of the palace is decorated with the coats of arms of the castles of the Republic. The upper part of the palace is decorated with Gwelphic battlements. To the left above the façade is a clock tower with the figure of St Marin standing between St Agatha and St Leo.
In front of the Government Palace is the Piazza della Libertà, or Pianella, in the centre of which stands the statue of Liberty by the sculptor Galetti, donated to San Marino by Countess Otilia Geirot Wagener in 1876.
