The Anglican Cathedral in Stone Town was built in 1870. It was the very first Anglican church in the whole of East Africa. The cathedral was built on the site of the ruined central slave market of Zanzibar. There is an interesting story associated with the construction of the cathedral. When the construction work was not yet completed, the chief architect went on safari, leaving the black workers unattended. What was his surprise when, on his return, he saw all eight columns near the entrance to the temple installed upside down! The stained glass window near the columns commemorates the British who died after 1870 fighting slave traders after the slave trade had already been banned.
